With prominent artists on both sides of her family,(Gwen Pratt FRAS and Douglas Pratt OBE) as well as artistic arts and cousins, it was natural for Dianne to paint whenever possible. Now she has more time to indulge her passion, her career emphasis has shifted from the scientific to the artistic. Her husband and two children share her interest in travel and the environment, so holidays are a great source of reference material for her paintings.
Endless ideas for paintings have been stimulated by trips to Australia’s wilderness areas such as; the rain forests of the Cape York Peninsula, the wetlands of Kakadu, the red gorges of the Kimberley and Hamersley Ranges, the inland deserts (Tanami, Pilbara, Simpson, Strezlecki, etc.) and the wild coast and reef areas (Broome, Shark Bay, Freycinet, Cape le Grande and the Great Barrier Reef). Trips to the Solomon Islands inspire her underwater paintings.
During her husband’s work in the Kimberleys as a flying vet, Dianne flew with him to remote cattle stations, sketching and photographing. Favourite subjects included; wildlife, landscape, mustering of cattle and aerial topography.
Paintings of a more decorative nature are inspired by her French ancestry. Antique portraits and figures, florals, and the character of the provinces are derived from regular trips to Europe.
The landscape, and the flora and fauna of the Red Centre provide a kaleidoscope of colour and drama. Works are derived from numerous visits to “the Rock” and cross-country treks; camping, sketching, photographing and painting en route. In 2003 Dianne painted in the Finke River area with the National Art School. Dianne has exhibited three times as “artist in residence” at the Mulgara Gallery, Ayers Rock Resort, Northern Territory.
Dianne’s paintings have been exhibited in Japan, England and France and have received awards in exhibitions. Her paintings are represented in Australian and international collections; (Brazil, Canada, China, Ecuador, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, the U.K. and U.S.A.).
